When we think of generosity, we might look at the size of the gift or the nobility of the cause. But Jesus measured generosity by a radically new standard: the condition of the giver’s heart. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).
So, giving is more than an obligation for followers of Christ; it is an exciting opportunity to lay up treasure that will last for all eternity. “The Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’ ” (Acts 20:35b). Yet statistics show that U.S. Christians give proportionately less than we did during the Great Depression. Today, like no other time in history, God has positioned His people with unprecedented wealth and opportunity to glorify the risen Christ by mirroring His generosity.
Generous Giving is a privately funded ministry that seeks to encourage givers of all income levels to experience the joy of giving and embrace a lifestyle of generosity, according to God’s word and Christ’s example. It was launched in 2000 by the Maclellan Foundation to stir a renewed, Spirit-led commitment to generosity among Christians. Generous Giving does not solicit donations.

We offer an array of practical tools for givers and entire churches to “excel in this grace of giving” (2 Corinthians 8:7b). These include books, study guides, curricula, Bible study notes, newsletters and an extensive online research library of articles, statistics, stewardship sermons and a forum for frequently asked questions. We also sponsor conferences in a safe environment free from the pressure of solicitation, where givers can hear inspiring stories of men and women who have experienced “the life that is truly life” (1 Timothy 6:19) through generous giving. Additionally, we host the Generous Giving Marketplace, the world’s largest searchable database of faith-based funding opportunities, posted by hundreds of churches and ministries working to advance the kingdom of God.
